It seems to be the day for these...'tis a sloooow work-day so I don't feel bad using up my lunch break doing this :). I can't hope to do all the ones I missed so I'm just gonna skip to Day 6 and go from there. Cool? Cool.

Day Six

In your own space, share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Something that impacted on your consciousness in a way that left its mark on your soul. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I...honestly had no idea which I wanted to choose for this. There are so many works that have changed my life, in small or big ways, over the years. And there was a post floating around a few months ago about how for many people of my generation, Harry Potter didn't change our lives, it shaped them, because we were so young to have grown up around them. And I think that applies to me with Star Wars, too, because I just can't imagine my life without that one. So in that sense, let's settle on Tolkien...I had been a fan of fantasy before watching those films and reading those books, but the vision and scope of Middle-Earth showed me all that fantasy could be. It taught me about loyalty, love, strength of all kinds, and Eowyn was so unbelievably important to shaping my perceptions of what I thought I could be and do. Harry Potter, Star Wars, those were kind of givens (and no doubt Star Wars consumed me to a degree that nothing else has before or since)...but LOTR has shaped so much of who I am and how I engage with fandom, both in good ways and in bad, that that's the one I'm gonna pick.

And I'm going to have to say Avengers too...it came out at a turning point in my life, and it sparked my first major, prolonged foray into fic writing. I've improved so much as a writer, come back stronger and bolder to other fandoms because of it, and I don't exaggerate when I say Bruce Banner helped me to love myself and forgive myself.

Day 7

In your own space, create a fanwork. A drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. A picspam. Something. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Kinda cheating, because I created this a few days ago, BUT as it's not going to be posted anytime soon (it's part of a much longer work that I'm still in outlining stages of) I figure why not post it here? Also you'll get thrilling insight into my drafting process, i.e. what I do when i bookmark something I don't feel like researching at that particular moment :P

“Keep your bow arm firm, Estel,” she called out, “do not let it drop after you release, or your aim will never be true.”

Estel turned around, and Gilraen could almost feel his adolescent irritation before he let out a heavy sigh. Gilraen forced back a smile--her son usually took her gentle criticisms in stride, but they were usually confined to the realm of academics, when she looked over the boy’s assignments from Erestor. Rarely did she come to watch Estel’s lessons in swordcraft or archery, the domain of Elven warriors.

“I’m trying, Mama,” he said, “But Glorfindel said I needed to concentrate on [some other common archery mistake idk].”

“He is not wrong,” Gilraen replied, “But you’re clever enough to concentrate on two things at once, are you not?”

Estel scowled.

“Glorfindel said [but seriously what else can you screw up with archery]” he repeated, “Doesn’t it make more sense to work on that part first?”

“I would not challenge your mother in this, young one,” Glorfindel chuckled. “If my memory serves me right, she can outshoot both Elladan and Elrohir if the need arises.”

Estel’s eyes widened in disbelief, and Gilraen shook her head as she shot Glorfindel a resigned look. She had never heard the tale of her flight to Rivendell recounted in full, nor did she have much desire to-- at this point, the memories had faded into little more than the remnants of a bad dream. Indeed, she would have preferred to entirely forget about the orcs she’d shot off of Elladan’s back, that final terror-filled night, but apparently the peredhil had made sure that the story made its rounds over the years.

“That was a long time ago, Glorfindel,” she said. “The last time I picked up a bow was…” the words died on her lips as she glanced back at Estel. The day we came to Rivendell.

“Well before this one was thought of, I’m sure,” Glorfindel finished for her, hardly missing a beat, “but I have no doubt you could hold your own against the best of us here, if given the chance.”

“It was over a decade ago,” Gilraen protested. “My skills have long fallen out of use.”

“Your body remembers such things,” Glorfindel shrugged. “You would be surprised at how quickly old motions return.”

I suppose he would know that better than most, Gilraen thought wryly

Day 8

In your own space, create a love meme for yourself. Let people tell you how amazing and awesome and loveable you really are. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. Surf the comments and find people to give love to.

Baah I feel weird about this one, but eh, everyone else is doing it so why not :3.

Skipping Day 9 because most "fics I thought I wouldn't like but then did" were Avenger orgy fics (plus the infamous Les Mis sex-pollen fic) and I am absolutely not tracking down those links on my work computer :P.

Day 10

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

Oooh, this is fun! Okay...

1. A nice layout for my Tumblr page...I have no technological ability whatsoever so I've got one of the stock layouts, but it'd be cool to have something a little fancier :).
2. Backstory fic starring young Ivorwen and young Dirhael :D
3. A nice Laura Roslin icon :)

Day 6: but the vision and scope of Middle-Earth showed me all that fantasy could be. It taught me about loyalty, love, strength of all kinds,

Well said!

Day 7: I *love* the idea of Gilraen not being a passive passenger hauled to Rivendell, which is how much fics seem to handle her. She was a Dunedain woman, and Tolkien said they were tall and brave... so it absolutely makes sense that she'd be an active participant in her own defense, not to mention the defense of her child. Go, Mama Bear! :D

Day 8: I'm soooooooooooooooo glad we've become good friends. You're an awesome writer, terrific fun to be around, and an all around classy person. And I'm sooooooooooo glad you've come back to the Tolkien fandom. *big smooshy hugs*

Day 9: Gosh, I wish I could help with a tumblr layout but that site completely mystifies me. I can barely manage to favorite other stuff on there. :/ And hmmm, backstory for young Ivorwen and Dirhael would be fascinating! I've not thought much about it but I imagine lots of sweet romance, at least in my universe. *g*

Heeee...I'm glad you love it, because there's going to be a lot more where that came from in this fic, once it gets off the ground! *g*

And d'aaaaw!! *blushes furiously* I'm so glad, too. And very glad I'm back in the Tolkien fandom! It's a nice place to be :D. *big massive smooshy hugs back*

I wish I could say that it's a problem I have with tumblr but it's an issue I have with layouts in general...you'll notice my LJ isn't so fancy either! But even now Tumblr's still my main base, these days, so I'm a bit more invested in getting that one spruced up. And yessssss to sweet romance! *g* Someday, in the far future, I'd like to tell their tale, but there's just too much on my to-write list rn for it to even make it on that!

Day 7 - Lovely little fic. I'm just starting to explore LotR fandom after re-watching the Dvds over Christmas!

Day 8 - You're into LotR, you did the challenge, all of that makes you an awesome friend :)

Day 10: Sorry I can't help with any of these but *hugs*.

Mmm. For all the fandoms I've loved, there's something about Tolkien that has always stood apart. My interest in other fandoms has waxed and waned, but in many ways LOTR has been a steady presence for the last... 15 years or so? (And honestly, when I think of the number of my long-term friendships that have had a mutual love of LOTR as either a starting point or strong theme over the years... :) )

And I am looooving the story bit. Looking forward to seeing more of it! I like your Gilraen. ^^ (Also, as far as other common archery mistakes - letting your wrist twist inward is Not Good, and as you get tired will soon result in the bowstring hitting your arm. Which is highly painful, as my many past bruises can attest. Even with an armguard, it's certainly possible to let it turn in such a way that the string will hit higher thank the part that's covered if you don't correct it. XD Other than that... finding a consistent anchor point would also be a big one. Proper foot position and controlled breathing might also be potential points to make?)

As for number 8 - I may have friended you only recently, but I've seen you around on others' journals for quite some time. I've thought before that you seemed like a fun person to know, but... well. I have a hard time actually gathering up the courage to figure out how to make a first step and Make Friends. XD I've certainly been enjoying getting to know you better, though!

"My interest in other fandoms has waxed and waned, but in many ways LOTR has been a steady presence for the last... 15 years or so?"

Same, though I guess more like 12 years than 15. It's definitely been the most consistent fandom of my life. And yes to those friendships! When my current roommate and I met five years ago one of our major bonding points was love over LOTR. And now the poor dear is beta'ing all my fic, lolol.

And yay, I'm so glad you love it! All these nice compliments on it are definitely incentive to keep going with it :). And aah, thank you for the archery tips! I'll have to use some of them...I used to do archery all the time when I worked at summer camp, but none of us were actually proficient in terms of teaching real technique, haha.

And d'aaaw *big hugs*. Right back atcha...I'm really horrible at getting the courage to talk to people and do that first step, so I was SO glad when you friended me because I was like "hey I've seen this person around she seems super cool"! It's been great to get to know you better as well! <3

Your Gilraen story looks to be an interesting one. Would like to read some more of her.

If it comes down to me you have day 9 fulfilled. Even without the links to the stories.

Ooh, Gilraen! Not only that, but badass Gilraen from the sound of it! As she would have to be, to live the life of the Dunedain. Gilraen doesn't get enough love.

Aaah, thanks so much! I love Gilraen to bits and am always sad that she doesn't get enough love...trying to rectify it by writing as many stories about her as I can!
