I...honestly had no idea which I wanted to choose for this. There are so many works that have changed my life, in small or big ways, over the years. And there was a post floating around a few months ago about how for many people of my generation, Harry Potter didn't change our lives, it shaped them, because we were so young to have grown up around them. And I think that applies to me with Star Wars, too, because I just can't imagine my life without that one. So in that sense, let's settle on Tolkien...I had been a fan of fantasy before watching those films and reading those books, but the vision and scope of Middle-Earth showed me all that fantasy could be. It taught me about loyalty, love, strength of all kinds, and Eowyn was so unbelievably important to shaping my perceptions of what I thought I could be and do. Harry Potter, Star Wars, those were kind of givens (and no doubt Star Wars consumed me to a degree that nothing else has before or since)...but LOTR has shaped so much of who I am and how I engage with fandom, both in good ways and in bad, that that's the one I'm gonna pick.
And I'm going to have to say Avengers too...it came out at a turning point in my life, and it sparked my first major, prolonged foray into fic writing. I've improved so much as a writer, come back stronger and bolder to other fandoms because of it, and I don't exaggerate when I say Bruce Banner helped me to love myself and forgive myself.

Kinda cheating, because I created this a few days ago, BUT as it's not going to be posted anytime soon (it's part of a much longer work that I'm still in outlining stages of) I figure why not post it here? Also you'll get thrilling insight into my drafting process, i.e. what I do when i bookmark something I don't feel like researching at that particular moment :P
“Keep your bow arm firm, Estel,” she called out, “do not let it drop after you release, or your aim will never be true.”
Estel turned around, and Gilraen could almost feel his adolescent irritation before he let out a heavy sigh. Gilraen forced back a smile--her son usually took her gentle criticisms in stride, but they were usually confined to the realm of academics, when she looked over the boy’s assignments from Erestor. Rarely did she come to watch Estel’s lessons in swordcraft or archery, the domain of Elven warriors.
“I’m trying, Mama,” he said, “But Glorfindel said I needed to concentrate on [some other common archery mistake idk].”
“He is not wrong,” Gilraen replied, “But you’re clever enough to concentrate on two things at once, are you not?”
“Glorfindel said [but seriously what else can you screw up with archery]” he repeated, “Doesn’t it make more sense to work on that part first?”
“I would not challenge your mother in this, young one,” Glorfindel chuckled. “If my memory serves me right, she can outshoot both Elladan and Elrohir if the need arises.”
Estel’s eyes widened in disbelief, and Gilraen shook her head as she shot Glorfindel a resigned look. She had never heard the tale of her flight to Rivendell recounted in full, nor did she have much desire to-- at this point, the memories had faded into little more than the remnants of a bad dream. Indeed, she would have preferred to entirely forget about the orcs she’d shot off of Elladan’s back, that final terror-filled night, but apparently the peredhil had made sure that the story made its rounds over the years.
“That was a long time ago, Glorfindel,” she said. “The last time I picked up a bow was…” the words died on her lips as she glanced back at Estel. The day we came to Rivendell.
“Well before this one was thought of, I’m sure,” Glorfindel finished for her, hardly missing a beat, “but I have no doubt you could hold your own against the best of us here, if given the chance.”
“It was over a decade ago,” Gilraen protested. “My skills have long fallen out of use.”
“Your body remembers such things,” Glorfindel shrugged. “You would be surprised at how quickly old motions return.”
I suppose he would know that better than most, Gilraen thought wryly

Baah I feel weird about this one, but eh, everyone else is doing it so why not :3.
Skipping Day 9 because most "fics I thought I wouldn't like but then did" were Avenger orgy fics (plus the infamous Les Mis sex-pollen fic) and I am absolutely not tracking down those links on my work computer :P.

Oooh, this is fun! Okay...
1. A nice layout for my Tumblr page...I have no technological ability whatsoever so I've got one of the stock layouts, but it'd be cool to have something a little fancier :).
2. Backstory fic starring young Ivorwen and young Dirhael :D
3. A nice Laura Roslin icon :)
